Our Values

Respecting and advocating for the autonomy of houseless TGNC young people is paramount to this work and thus we provide cell phones, public transportation passes, a method of emergency complaint via cell and email, regular check-ins, and require that host homes provide a private room with a door that locks. We also provide gender affirming clothing/items, toiletries, and bedding/linens for the hostees, as well as food/utility stipends for the hosts.

Thompson House prioritizes Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) applying to be a hostee or a host. We aim to foster a culture of peer-mentorship that affirms the expertise and wisdom of BIPOC people, and will prioritize the economic opportunity of stipend compensation to BIPOC people.

Homeless vs. Houseless

At Thompson House, we use the term “houseless” to describe someone facing housing instability, from living on the street to couch surfing, to transitional housing. We prefer not to use the term “homeless” because the home is a very personal element of one’s humanity.

One’s home may be defined by more than the roof over one’s head. A home, or a feeling of home, can emanate from friendships, community building, or within. In addition, what we call a house, may not feel like a home to someone fleeing an abusive situation or living in a place that simply does not feel like home for a vast variety of reasons.
